A French politician, Marine Le Pen, has been convicted of embezzling EU funds and has been barred from running in the 2027 presidential election in France. According to French media, Le Pen was sentenced to a five-year political ban, during which she will not be allowed to run for office, as well as a four-year prison sentence, with two years suspended and a fine of €100,000. Le Pen, the leader of the far-right party Rassemblement National, was found guilty of embezzling EU funds to pay party employees. The party itself was also fined €2 million, with €1 million of that fine being immediate and the remaining €1 million being seized during the investigation. Twenty-three other defendants were sentenced to terms ranging from six months to four years, with two years of the sentence to be served without the possibility of early release. Only one of the defendants was acquitted. The court found Le Pen to be the “heart of a plan to embezzle EU funds” to pay party employees. Le Pen’s lawyer has already announced plans to appeal the decision.
