A German politician, Alexander Schweitzer, the Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate, has expressed support for a reform of the debt brake and an infrastructure pact. He advocates for an infrastructure consensus in all of Germany that would last beyond a parliamentary term, with the federal government, states and municipalities all contributing. According to Schweitzer, those in political responsibility have not taken sufficient action in major urban areas to ensure the infrastructure grows with the area, resulting in a lack of development and growth.
Schweitzer also believes that the current debt brake makes it difficult to manage the future financial burdens and that it needs to be adapted to accommodate the needs of the country. He suggests that more fiscal room is needed for investment and that the current focus on the debt brake is misguided, as the country’s bridges are in disrepair and the education system underfunded.
