German Politician Calls for Emergency Session of German Parliament Amid US Trade Tensions
Britta Haßelmann, a former member of the Green Party and currently the co-leader of the parliamentary group of the former “Traffic Light” party, has called for an extraordinary session of the German Bundestag in response to the potential US trade tariffs announced by former US President Donald Trump.
In a social media post, Haßelmann said, “Since the announcement of Trump’s plan to impose massive tariffs on all US imports, there is growing concern about the severe consequences for trade and the economy. We are offering the leaders of the CDU and SPD the opportunity to jointly summon the Bundestag to a special session.”
The Green Party’s co-leader, Katharina Dröge, also expressed her concerns, stating, “Actionism, SPD? Whoever wants to govern a country must be able to make quick decisions in crises. The world does not take a pause until the CDU and SPD have agreed on something. Businesses and employees need answers to Trump’s tariff policy.”
The Bundestag is officially set to reconvene in May, but Haßelmann and Dröge are urging an emergency session to address the potential consequences of the US trade tariffs.
In a statement, SPD Fraktionsvize Dirk Wiese rejected the call for an emergency session, saying, “I can little understand the actionism of the green leadership.” He added that the current government, led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is still in office and has all the rights and duties until a new chancellor is elected, including the green ministers.
Reactions from the CDU and SPD party leaders were not available at the time of publication.
