In a recent statement, Christian Social Union (CSU) General Secretary Martin Huber reiterated the party’s demand for controls and rejections at Germany’s borders. Huber made the comment during the CSU party convention in Nuremberg, as reported by the Phoenix television station.
According to Huber, the European freedom of movement has the protection of the European external borders as a prerequisite and “this does not work as it is supposed to.” Therefore, it is “in the sense of our security necessary to control also at the internal borders.”
Huber cited Denmark and the Netherlands as examples of how border controls are possible. If necessary, the European law would need to be changed, he said. “If there are any European hurdles, then one must change them.” It cannot be the task of politics to simply accept existing regulations, Huber emphasized. Instead, the political task is to create new laws and regulations if it is determined that the situation has changed and needs to be addressed in a fair manner.
