Berlin, Germany – German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, a member of the Green party, is reportedly seeking the position of President of the United Nations General Assembly. According to a report by the German news magazine Spiegel, the proposal from the Foreign Ministry is expected to be approved by the federal government in the so-called “Umlaufverfahren”, a procedure typically used when a prior agreement has been reached internally within the government.
In July of last year, the federal government, comprising the SPD, Greens and FDP, had nominated diplomat Helga Schmid for the position. It now appears that Baerbock may take over the role in September instead.
The President of the General Assembly of the United Nations holds the position for a one-year term, with the responsibility rotating among the groups of African, Asian-Pacific, Eastern European, Latin American and Caribbean and Western European and other states. In the year 2025, the presidency will again be held by the Western European and other states group, which includes the United States and Australia in this classification.
