Augsburg Appoints Benni Weber as New Sports Director and Welcomes Back Manuel Baum and New Hires
The German Bundesliga club FC Augsburg has announced the appointment of Benni Weber as its new sports director. The 42-year-old joins the club from SC Paderborn, as reported on Friday. Prior to his role as sports director, Weber worked as a co-trainer and video analyst for several top-tier European clubs, including Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Mainz 05.
According to FC Augsburg’s management, Weber’s success lies not only in his sporting achievements but also in his ability to attract and develop young talent, as evidenced by the five German national youth team players he has brought to the club. “The philosophy of the club and the people involved have convinced me quickly” Weber said in a statement. “I want to contribute to the club’s development with a strong team in the coming years.”
In another move, Manuel Baum returns to the club as the head of development and football innovation. Baum previously worked at Augsburg from 2014 to 2019, initially as the head of the Paul-Renz Academy and later as the head coach of the first team.
Marc Lettau, a new hire, will take on the role of the team’s new planner, overseeing the scouting team and leading the roster planning, alongside technical director Christoph Janker. Julian Baumgartlinger, a former professional, will serve as the coordinator of the first-team department.
