Brandenburg Targets Harder Stance on Extremism

The Brandenburg State Premier, Dietmar Woidke, has called for a more robust approach to combating right-wing extremism, citing a concerning rise in attacks targeting individuals with differing viewpoints, minority groups, youth facilities and celebrations of democracy. Speaking to the German publication “Die Zeit” Woidke expressed concern that recent incidents are evoking memories of the 1990s and a period of heightened violence.

Woidke emphasized the need for swift and stringent legal action against extremist acts, highlighting the importance of protecting those who actively promote and defend a free and open society. He specifically advocated for an increase in specialized police units, emphasizing the need to move beyond simply disrupting extremist groups and to take concrete actions against them.

The call for intensified measures comes as Woidke leads a coalition government in Brandenburg, formed following last year’s state election. Addressing speculation surrounding his own political future, particularly in light of the impending departure of Saxony-Anhalt’s Premier Reiner Haseloff, Woidke reaffirmed his commitment to completing his current term in office. He stated his priority remains fulfilling the promises made to the citizens of Brandenburg and upholding his duty to serve throughout the legislature.
