German authorities have taken action in multiple federal states against individuals suspected of being part of a government-opposed terrorist organization. The suspicion is of founding and membership in a terrorist organization.
A total of 19 objects in six federal states were searched, according to a press statement by the General Public Prosecutor. The searches targeted 17 individuals already known to the authorities, who are accused of founding and being a member of the “Brigade N’Hamedu”. The organization aims to overthrow the government in Eritrea. In Germany, it has been attempting to prevent official Eritrean events through violent actions and has also targeted security forces.
The group drew media attention in 2022 and 2023, following violent outbursts at the Eritrea Festival in Gießen, during which police officers were injured. After a similar incident in 2022, the police used around 1,000 officers to protect the festival in 2023.
The searches were aimed at securing additional evidence. A total of 200 police officers were deployed during the operation, with no arrests reported, according to the General Public Prosecutor.
