US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has pledged the commitment of the incoming Trump administration to the ceasefire agreements between Israel and Hamas.
“I believe it was important to make clear to all parties that the new government supports and endorses the agreement and will take responsibility in the framework of the agreement” Blinken said in Washington on Thursday, specifically praising the new US special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.
The US chief diplomat also defended the decision to involve the Trump team in the negotiations. “Practically everything that needs to be implemented under the agreement will be implemented under the Trump administration” he said, adding that it is not important who reaps the laurels for the final agreement.
The ceasefire agreement for the Gaza Strip was announced on Wednesday, with the truce set to take effect on Sunday, pending the approval of the Israeli cabinet. The Israeli cabinet is now scheduled to vote on the Gaza ceasefire and the hostage agreement on Friday, after a delay due to alleged Hamas violations.
