Berlin’s Cultural Senator Joe Chialo (CDU) Resigns. “Today, I have asked the Governing Mayor for the dismissal from my office as Senator for Culture and Social Cohesion” he announced on Friday. Chialo further referred to extensive budget cuts for Berlin’s cultural sector. “Last year, I carried out the demanded cuts in the cultural budget with a heavy heart – aware of our shared responsibility for the city” said Chialo. “However, the planned further cuts go too deep into existing plans and target settings, changing central professional prerequisites and leading to the looming closure of nationally renowned cultural institutions.” Chialo had recently been considered as a possible successor to Claudia Roth (Grüne) in the office of the Federal Minister of Culture. However, the CDU officially announced on Monday that media entrepreneur Wolfram Weimer will instead take on the position.
