Berlin Warsaw Seek Border Deal

Concerns are mounting ahead of a planned implementation of systematic border controls by Poland at its frontier with Germany. The German Police Union (GdP) has expressed hope for a negotiated solution between both nations to avert potential disruptions in the handling of individuals seeking protection and asylum.

Andreas Roßkopf, chairman of the GdP’s Federal Police division, told publications of the Funke-Mediengruppe that Poland has repeatedly voiced discontent regarding intensified border controls by Germany and the subsequent rejection of asylum seekers. He cautioned that without coordination, a situation of reciprocal transfers – “pushing” individuals back and forth – could arise, a scenario that must be avoided. “These are people who must not become pawns in political maneuvering” Roßkopf stated.

He acknowledged ongoing intensive discussions between German and Polish authorities, with the hope of achieving constructive outcomes. The Federal Police requires clear, binding guidelines on when and under what circumstances individuals can be returned at internal borders, coupled with assurances that neighboring countries will reciprocate these returns as agreed. The upcoming Monday is being viewed with significant concern.

Poland’s decision to implement systematic border checks, which commenced partially over the weekend and are officially slated to begin Monday, is a response to Germany’s prior and intensified border controls on individuals entering from Poland. The aim of both measures is to curb irregular migration. The resulting traffic congestion at the Polish border has significantly hampered the flow of goods and people. The new Polish border controls, currently limited to August 5th, risk exacerbating the existing challenges.
