Berlin Public Transit Soaring Costs Loom

Berlin’s subsidized public transport ticket, known as the Sozialticket, is set to increase in price starting in early 2026. Social Senator Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD) announced the adjustment, stating the cost will rise from the current €19 to €27.50.

Senator Kiziltepe emphasized that the price increase could have been considerably higher and reiterated her commitment to ensuring affordable mobility for low-income residents. The Sozialticket is available to individuals receiving social benefits, granting them access to discounted fares.

The upcoming price change represents a return to the cost of the ticket prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Introduced by former Social Senator Elke Breitenbach, the Sozialticket originally priced at €27.50. Kiziltepe expressed a desire to maintain the current rate but acknowledged the need for budgetary consolidation.

The price of the Sozialticket was previously raised to €19 in April 2025, marking a significant increase from the previous cost of €9.
