Berlin Pride Security Intensifies

Berlin authorities are preparing for a large-scale security operation during Saturday’s “Christopher Street Day” (CSD) celebrations, marking a significant increase in security measures compared to previous years. The police union, GdP, anticipates an “absolute major deployment” due to evolving safety concerns.

Benjamin Jendro, spokesperson for the Berlin state association of the GdP, emphasized that security considerations now include elements previously not required. He specifically cited the need for protective measures such as vehicle barriers, referencing recent acts of violence and terrorism.

Furthermore, Jendro highlighted an increase in targeted acts of violence against the LGBTQ+ community emanating from right-wing extremist circles, involving both individuals and groups with external elements traveling to Berlin. He stressed the necessity to monitor any gatherings that may occur in proximity to the CSD event.

While acknowledging these heightened concerns, a police spokesperson stated that authorities currently have no specific intelligence regarding threats from right-wing extremist groups. They are preparing for a peaceful event, but are continuously assessing potential risks and implementing necessary precautions.

A counter-demonstration by right-wing extremists is planned near the Schöneberger Ufer, with organizers expecting approximately 400 attendees. The police are deploying around 1,300 officers, supported by rapid response units from other federal states, to manage the event and maintain public safety.
