Berlin police have launched an investigation following an assault that occurred Friday evening at Alexanderplatz in the Mitte district. A 49-year-old man was reportedly attacked, punched and kicked by a 20-year-old individual and subjected to racially motivated insults while walking with his eleven-year-old son.
Authorities have identified the alleged attacker and two companions, aged 17 and 18, as trainee officers with the Berlin Police. The incident escalated from a verbal exchange, culminating in the 20-year-old allegedly striking the man in the face and kicking him while he was on the ground.
The 49-year-old victim sustained injuries to his head and hand and required hospital treatment. The primary suspect recorded a blood alcohol content of approximately 1.9 per mille and his companions were also found to be under the influence of alcohol.
The State Security division of the Berlin Criminal Investigation Department has taken over the investigation. In addition to potential criminal charges, internal disciplinary measures are also under consideration. Notably, the 20-year-old trainee officer has filed a counter-complaint alleging threats against him.
