Berlin police responded to a disturbance in the Wedding district late Monday night, resulting in an officer-involved shooting. According to authorities, officers were dispatched to a multi-family residence following a call reporting a man brandishing a knife.
Upon arrival at approximately 11:45 PM, officers found the man, identified as being 40 years old, still in possession of the weapon and reportedly causing self-inflicted injuries. Police stated that repeated verbal commands were issued instructing the man to drop the knife, with warnings regarding the potential use of firearms. Following these attempts, officers discharged their weapons, striking the man in the legs.
The injured man was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving intensive care. A specialized homicide investigation unit has been assigned to thoroughly examine the incident, a standard procedure following instances of police firearm use.
