The SPD gathered in Berlin on Saturday for its federal party convention. With a closed procession of the party’s top leadership, it started a few minutes late in the morning. The only five-hour scheduled agenda is intended to set the final course for the federal election.
In particular, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to be reconfirmed as the Social Democrats’ chancellor candidate. He will address the delegates directly beforehand. Additionally, speeches by party chair Lars Klingbeil and Saskia Esken are planned. The day’s agenda concludes with the discussion and decision on the election program.
The SPD is hoping to start a comeback in the election campaign with the party convention. Since the internal debate over the K-question, with Scholz’s nomination, was settled, the SPD has barely gained in the polls. The Union continues to lead in all major opinion polls, while the Social Democrats even rank fourth in the ZDF Politbarometer, only on the third place in some surveys.
