The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has brought charges against a Syrian man for attempted murder at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin. The announcement, made Tuesday in Karlsruhe, details a complex set of accusations encompassing motives and alleged connections to foreign organizations.
The indictment cites motivations described as “low” and treacherous, alongside charges of aggravated assault and attempted membership in a foreign terrorist organization. According to prosecutors, the accused travelled from Leipzig to Berlin on February 21, 2025, with the intention of carrying out a knife attack targeting individuals he perceived as non-believers.
The attack occurred at the Holocaust Memorial in central Berlin, where the accused seriously injured a person with a knife. Prior to the incident, he allegedly sent a photograph of himself to members of the Islamic State, ostensibly intending to provide the organization the opportunity to claim responsibility for the act.
The suspect was apprehended on the same day and has been held in pre-trial detention since then. The investigation remains ongoing.
