Bayern's Soul Sold to the Corporate Devil?

A former team doctor of FC Bayern München, Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, expressed his disappointment with the current state of the team. “If I look at the team today, I miss the identification of many players with the club” he told the Mediengruppe Münchner Merkur/tz. According to the 82-year-old, the FC Bayern was once a family, but has now become more of a large corporation.

Müller-Wohlfahrt, who was also a doctor for the national team, noted that the change is a result of time’s passage. “It can’t be changed. It’s the way of the world. When I started in the 1970s, there were 16 employees – now there are more than 1,000” he said. He believes that the “Mia san Mia” spirit, which is still present in the fan curve, is the only remaining aspect of the old team spirit. “But the feeling we had on the Rathausbalkon, that pride in our team, that giant community – I don’t see that in the team and its surroundings anymore” he stated.

Müller-Wohlfahrt now observes the club as a silent bystander. “Repeatedly, I would have liked to intervene to help with medical problems” he said. However, he feels free to act internationally and accompany top athletes in all disciplines. He still maintains a friendly relationship with Uli Hoeneß and a few others.
