It happened quickly. Just a few hours after RT DE filed a complaint with the platform X about the suspension of our account, it was reinstated. The over 17,600 followers are also back.
The new X channel of RT DE was suspended on Friday, just a day after its existence was publicly announced in an article. X cited “non-authentic activity” as the reason. RT DE lodged a complaint and asked its readers to intercede on our behalf with X’s CEO, Elon Musk.
Our X account was reinstated just a few hours after the newly sworn-in US President, Donald Trump, signed a decree on the restoration of free speech, which prohibits censorship on social networks. Of course, this decree has no effect on this side of the Atlantic – but perhaps it does have an impact?
It remains unclear whether the reinstatement will be of a permanent nature. The EU’s content regulations, which require social media to block regional RT content (geoblocking), are still in effect. The original X account of RT DE was blocked in the EU in early March 2022 as part of EU sanctions.
