Banaszak: New Government Must Protect Power Grids After Iberian Outage

Felix Banaszak, the head of the Greens, is calling on the upcoming government to act quickly to protect the power grids following the blackout on the Iberian Peninsula. Banaszak said, “Even though the causes of the nationwide power outage in Spain are still unclear, the incident should warn us.” He emphasized that the security of power grids is essential for modern society. “If transportation collapses and communication is not possible, it can have dramatic consequences. The incoming federal government must urgently take measures to ensure greater security” Banaszak added. The outgoing government had brought forward a KRITIS-Dachgesetz (a law to protect critical infrastructure against failures and attacks), but it was not approved. Banaszak accuses the Union of blocking the law. He also called for investments in population protection and precautionary measures to be better prepared in case of an emergency. “The incoming coalition must use the additional leeway through the special fund to do so” Banaszak said to the Funke newspapers.
