Bamf to Resume Syrian Asylum Hearings Amid Uncertain Country Situation

The Federal Agency for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) has announced that it will resume processing asylum applications filed by Syrians. The agency had previously stopped conducting interviews with Syrians and making decisions on their applications due to the unstable situation in the country. Currently, around 56,000 Syrians are living in Germany with a temporary residence permit while their asylum applications are pending. The agency’s decision to resume interviews has two main reasons: firstly, Germany is the only European country that is not conducting interviews with Syrian asylum seekers and secondly, the agency wants to gather additional information on the situation in Syria. The interviews will initially be conducted at three Bamf locations. The agency acknowledges that assessing the situation in Syria is extremely difficult due to its volatile nature. Decisions on Syrian cases will be anything but easy, according to the agency. The agency’s division head, Patrick Schmidtke, emphasized that it would be wrong to assume that Syrian cases can be processed easily. (
