The German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport is expressing cautious optimism regarding the impending announcement of the new CEO for Deutsche Bahn. A ministry spokesperson indicated on Friday that Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) aims to present the candidate as early as next Monday. While acknowledging the process remains subject to various factors, the spokesperson affirmed a positive outlook regarding the minister’s ability to unveil a successor.
However, the passenger advocacy group Pro Bahn has voiced considerably more skepticism. Detlef Neuß, the group’s chairman, told the “Rheinische Post” newspaper that the timeframe makes a prompt announcement unlikely. He suggested potential candidates have declined consideration or are hesitant due to concerns about their ability to effectively address the company’s challenges. Neuß emphasized a general lack of significant expectations for the minister’s plans, stating that fundamental systemic changes within Deutsche Bahn could not be implemented so rapidly.
Previously, the ministry announced that Monday’s presentation would include key elements of a Deutsche Bahn reform and a new corporate strategy. The position of CEO became vacant following the premature departure of Richard Lutz in August. Lutz currently serves in an interim capacity while a permanent replacement is secured. The incoming CEO faces a formidable task, inheriting a company struggling with persistently declining punctuality rates and substantial financial losses.
