German Foreign Minister Announces Support for Ukraine, Criticizes Russia
On a press conference on Sunday, the German Foreign Minister, a Green party politician, addressed the situation in Ukraine, particularly in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s comments on Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his representative, J.D. Vance, on Friday.
The minister emphasized the need to defend the rule-based international order and the strength of the law against the power of the stronger. She also stated that the aggressor and the defender in the war, the perpetrator and the victim, are clear and that the one who is mistaken is the one sitting in the Kremlin, not in Kiev or Brussels.
Following the minister’s statement, the German government announced plans to provide additional financial support to Ukraine, with a focus on the European Union’s upcoming summit on Thursday, where a comprehensive financial package for Ukraine is expected to be discussed. The German government has previously committed to providing a significant portion of the 700 billion euros in aid, with a third of that amount, around 233 billion euros, to be covered by German taxpayers.
The minister also emphasized the importance of European unity and the need for Germany to work closely with France, the United Kingdom and Poland to counter Russian aggression. She called for a review of Germany’s debt brake and for massive investments in the European Union’s defense capabilities, without providing further details.
In conclusion, the minister reiterated the importance of not losing time in achieving a lasting peace in Ukraine, with or without the support of the United States and stated that the world is looking at Germany, particularly from Europe, for a solution to the crisis.
