Baerbock Demands Iron-Clad Security Guarantees for a Lasting Peace

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) welcomed the imminent negotiations aimed at ending the Ukraine war, while cautioning against a superficial peace agreement.

“At the end of negotiations, a sustainable peace solution must be in place, ensuring the sovereignty of Ukraine and guaranteeing that Putin’s Russia will not again threaten European peace” she said on Friday before the Munich Security Conference. “A superficial peace, disregarding the concerns of Ukrainians and Europeans, would be a hollow achievement.”

According to Baerbock, peace can only be achieved through strength. “This requires hard and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, a strong NATO and progress in Ukraine’s accession talks with the European Union.
