Apothecary Closures Threaten Health Access

The ongoing closure of pharmacies across Germany is prompting concerns about access to essential medicines and healthcare advice, particularly for vulnerable populations. Michaela Engelmeier, Chair of the Social Association Germany (SoVD), has called for a coordinated effort to preserve local pharmaceutical services.

Speaking to the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ), Engelmeier emphasized the negative impact of pharmacy closures, highlighting issues such as increased travel distances for patients, reduced access to professional advice and potential health risks. The situation is deemed especially critical in rural areas, where pharmacies often serve as vital community hubs, not just for medication but also as trusted sources of health information.

These closures disproportionately affect elderly individuals, those with chronic illnesses and people with mobility limitations. Engelmeier stressed the need for all relevant stakeholders to work together to address this trend, prioritizing the needs of affected individuals.

Data from the Federal Association of German Pharmacist Associations (ABDA) reveals a consistent decline in the number of pharmacies nationwide. By the end of 2024, Germany had approximately 17,500 pharmacies – a level not seen since the 1970s. Experts attribute this decrease to factors including a shortage of skilled pharmacy professionals, economic pressures and increasing administrative burdens.
