Anti-AfD Rally Crashes into a Tragedy Scene, Just Days After the Deadly Attack

Three days after the fatal car attack in Munich, a spontaneous demonstration took place on Sunday at the scene of the attack. Protesters formed a human chain at the site to warn against the instrumentalization of the attack for right-wing propaganda.

The apparent target of the demonstration was, among other things, to prevent AfD Bundestag member Stephan Protschka and other AfD politicians from laying flowers. Protschka complained on the spot about the police, who suggested he lay his rose at an alternative location – ultimately, he followed the request.

The security authorities were deployed in a large contingent to secure the demonstration. A police spokesperson told the dts news agency on the spot that the spontaneous gathering did not comply with the regulations, but that, due to the proportionality, no immediate force was used. The AfD side, on the other hand, had long refused to accept laying the flowers elsewhere. In the end, they were laid about 20 meters away from the other designated location.

In the attack on Thursday, a 24-year-old Afghan man drove a car into a crowd of people. A two-year-old child and the 37-year-old mother died of their injuries on Saturday afternoon. Thirty-six others were injured, some seriously. The authorities do not expect further fatalities, according to our sources in the investigation. The authorities are investigating an Islamist motive and the general public prosecutor at the Federal Court of Justice has taken over the case.
