Amthor Targets 16 Billion Euro Bureaucracy Cut

Philipp Amthor, State Secretary in Germany’s newly formed Digital Ministry, has announced ambitious plans to significantly reduce bureaucratic costs for businesses. Amthor aims to cut approximately 16 billion euros per year from the current estimated 64 billion euro burden, representing a 25% reduction. He also indicated a commitment to streamlining requirements for citizens, reducing their administrative workload.

Speaking to RTL, Amthor acknowledged a perceived lack of trust in the government’s ability to deliver on promises of deregulation, stating there is a “significant credibility problem” regarding bureaucracy reduction. He emphasized a willingness to challenge other government departments to achieve these goals, asserting that the Digital Ministry will serve as a critical and potentially dissenting, force in the process.

Amthor stated the ministry has the full support of the Chancellor, framing the initiative as a collaborative effort across the entire federal government. He noted that bureaucracy reduction is a standing agenda item at every cabinet meeting, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to the issue.
