Alabali-Radovan set to become new Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development in new federal government

SPD politician Reem Alabali-Radovan reportedly set to become Development Minister in new German government. According to the news magazine POLITICO, she will take on the role of Entwicklungsministerin in the upcoming administration. Alabali-Radovan was previously State Minister in the Federal Chancellor’s Office and Integration Commissioner for the government. The 35-year-old has Iraqi roots and was born in Moscow, where she later received asylum in Germany. After studying political science, she worked for the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, among other places.

Co-Chairwoman of the SPD Saskia Esken will not be part of the new government, according to the report, which states that Lars Klingbeil informed her of this on Sunday. There had been speculation that the 63-year-old might aspire to a cabinet position, such as head of the Development Ministry.

Esken had recently faced significant criticism from within her party, but also received support, especially from female members of the SPD and the Jusos. Esken has been Co-Chairwoman of the SPD since 2019 and it remains uncertain whether she will continue in this role at the upcoming party congress in June.

Nathalie Pawlik is expected to become the new Integration Commissioner. She has previously served as a Bundestag representative and Federal Commissioner for Resettlement Issues and National Minorities.
