AI vs. Hybrid Threats: Germany's New Battle Plan

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced plans to increase the use of artificial intelligence in the fight against hybrid threats from abroad. Dobrindt emphasized the need for a stronger technical, legal and organizational response in Germany, stating that “artificial intelligence must be used more strongly in the intelligence services to counter hybrid threats than before.” The minister highlighted that the government will provide “strong financial support” for the security authorities to achieve this goal.

Hybrid threats, including sabotage and espionage, are on the rise, according to Dobrindt, who pointed out that the attacks on Germany’s infrastructure are particularly concerning. “Attackers are trying to disrupt both civilian targets, such as energy and rail networks, as well as military targets like barracks” the CSU politician said.

The issue of hybrid threats will also be discussed at the upcoming Interior Ministers’ Conference in Bremerhaven, starting on Wednesday. According to a draft of the conference’s resolution, the federal government and the states must work together to develop more targeted and efficient measures to counter sabotage, espionage and disinformation.
