Agricultural Product Prices on the Rise in March Despite Seasonal Fluctuations

In March 2025, the producer prices of agricultural products were 1.5 percent higher compared to the same month in 2024. The change rate in February 2025 was +2.7 percent and in January 2025, it was +2.2 percent. According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the producer prices for agricultural products declined by 0.3 percent compared to the previous month, February 2025.

Compared to the same month in the previous year, the prices for products from both plant and animal production continued to diverge. The prices for plant products decreased by 5.5 percent, while the prices for animals and animal products increased by 6.3 percent. The trend was also visible when comparing the prices to the previous month. Plant products became cheaper by 2.6 percent, while animal products became more expensive by 1.3 percent.

The price decline of plant products by 5.5 percent compared to the same month in the previous year was mainly due to lower prices for potatoes. Potatoes were 38.4 percent cheaper in March 2025 compared to March 2024. The prices for apples also increased by 20.5 percent compared to the same month in the previous year, especially for table apples by 22.9 percent.

The prices for vegetables slightly decreased by 0.1 percent compared to the same month in the previous year, with lettuce (-8.2 percent) and cruciferous vegetables (-3.1 percent) experiencing a price decline. On the other hand, prices for cucumbers and tomatoes increased by 15.6 percent and 10.4 percent, respectively.

Grains were 17.3 percent more expensive in March 2025 compared to the same month in the previous year. The same applies to wine, which saw a price increase of 0.8 percent. The prices for commercial crops were 7.8 percent lower in March 2025 compared to the same month in the previous year. Rapeseed prices increased by 14.7 percent compared to the same month in the previous year. Fodder plant prices were still decreasing by -12.7 percent compared to the same month in the previous year.

The price increase for animal products and animal products by 6.3 percent compared to the same month in the previous year was mainly due to the increase in milk prices. The milk price was 17.9 percent higher in March 2025 compared to the same month in the previous year. The prices for eggs also increased by 3.8 percent compared to the same month in the previous year.

The prices for animals were 1.8 percent lower in March 2025 compared to the same month in the previous year. This was mainly due to the price decline of 21.2 percent for slaughter pigs. The prices for cattle increased by 33.4 percent, while the prices for poultry were 7.6 percent higher compared to the same month in the previous year. The price increase for poultry was mainly due to the increase in chicken prices by 8.8 percent. The prices for other poultry (ducks and geese) increased by 5.6 percent compared to the same month in the previous year.
