Halle, a city in the Saale region, has elected a non-party-affiliated mayor. In the runoff election on Sunday, Alexander Vogt won against the acting mayor, Egbert Geier of the SPD. Notably, Vogt was supported in the election campaign by the AfD, which also won the direct mandate for the electoral district 71 Halle in the simultaneous federal election. Prior to running as an independent, Vogt had attempted in vain to be nominated by the CDU.
Halle has experience with non-party-affiliated mayors, as Bernd Wiegand held the office from 2012. He gained national attention for getting vaccinated against COVID-19 before the general priority and was subsequently suspended by the city council in 2021.
