AfD Ties to Trump Allies Raise Concerns

Concerns are mounting within Germany’s political landscape regarding the increasing alignment of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party with foreign interests, particularly those emanating from the United States. Green Party interior policy expert Irene Mihalic has publicly stated that evidence suggests the AfD is increasingly influenced by “authoritarian forces abroad” accusing the party of prioritizing directives from overseas rather than addressing domestic challenges.

The accusations stem from a series of recent trips undertaken by over twenty AfD representatives from the Bundestag (federal parliament), the European Parliament and the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt, all visiting the United States. Mihalic alleges these visits are indicative of a deliberate strategy to synchronize German policy with the “MAGA” agenda championed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Adding fuel to the fire, the AfD has formally requested a report from the federal government for examination by the Bundestag’s interior affairs committee. The report’s focus: the security policy implications of the U.S. government’s potential classification of “Antifa Ost” as a terrorist group. The request arrives as several individuals associated with the “Antifa Ost” collective are currently on trial in Dresden, facing charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault and theft of firearms. Critics view this maneuver as a cynical attempt to leverage U.S. government actions to advance an anti-left-wing agenda within Germany.

Further highlighting what is portrayed as an alarming convergence, AfD’s foreign policy representative Markus Frohnmaier was recently honored as a guest of honor at a gala hosted by an influential club of young Republicans in New York. This appearance has intensified scrutiny of the party’s international connections and further fueled the suspicion that the AfD is strategically aligning itself with specific political movements in the United States. The Green Party’s Mihalic explicitly linked Frohnmaier’s travel and other similar instances to this broader pattern of foreign influence, demanding deeper investigation into the scope and impact of these connections. The implications for German sovereignty and domestic political stability are becoming a central point of contention within the country’s political discourse.
