Saxony’s Political Landscape Shifts as AfD Surges in Latest Poll

Four months after the Saxon state election, a new poll reveals a significant strengthening of the strongest opposition force, the AfD, while the SPD continues to struggle in the state.

According to a Civey survey, the AfD is currently at 36% in Saxony, a 5.4 percentage point increase from its strong result in the previous year’s election. The AfD’s parliamentary group commented, “A slap in the face for the minority government and the Left Bloc.”

Although the AfD came in first with 31.9% of the vote in the September election, the CDU, led by Michael Kretschmer, has formed a minority government with the AfD and holds the office of the prime minister.

The CDU has maintained its January 2025 result of 32%, a slight increase from the 31.9% it received in the previous year’s election. The SPD, on the other hand, has seen a significant decline in popularity, with only 5% of respondents expressing support, a drop from the 7.5% in the previous year.

The BSW has also suffered a significant loss, with only 7% of respondents showing support, a decline from the 11.8% in the previous year.

The Greens, on the other hand, have gained 5.1 percentage points, now standing at 7%. The Left Party remains stagnant at 4%, while the FDP continues to be seen as unnecessary, with only 2% of respondents expressing support, a slight increase from the 0.9% in the previous year.
