Activist Accuses Merz of Broken Promise

Prominent climate activist Luisa Neubauer has accused Chancellor Friedrich Merz of breaking a promise made during the recent election campaign. In an interview with the “Tagesspiegel”, Neubauer highlighted a perceived contradiction between Merz’s previous commitment to climate targets and the subsequent decision within the governing coalition to significantly expand natural gas exploration.

Neubauer asserted that this policy shift is creating significant obstacles to Germany’s ability to meet its climate goals. She expressed skepticism regarding Merz’s genuine dedication to climate protection, stating what she believes to be a lack of serious engagement on the issue.

Describing climate change as a defining global force, Neubauer emphasized the urgency of the situation and placed responsibility on the Chancellor to address it effectively. She criticized what she characterized as a reluctance to acknowledge and tackle the problem head-on, arguing for a more accountable approach to leadership on climate issues and rejecting justifications for inaction.
