'Absurd Idea' Rocks Neutrality

A recent decision by the US to impose a 32% tariff on Swiss exports has sparked debate. Former Swiss Federal Councillor Christoph Blocher has criticized the move, calling it “unjustified” and questioning the underlying calculations.

US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose the tariffs on Swiss exports came as a surprise to the Swiss government, leading to confusion in the Federal Council. However, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Karin Keller-Sutter, remained calm in her reaction.

Even within the Swiss People’s Party, which has historically supported Trump, there was criticism. National Councilor Franz Grüter, who had previously described himself as a Trump supporter, expressed shock. Magdalena Martullo-Blocher, who had previously defended Trump’s policies, has not yet commented.

In an interview, Christoph Blocher discussed the tariffs, stating that he cannot understand how the US arrived at the conclusion that Switzerland imposes 61% tariffs. He pointed out that Switzerland has abolished its industrial tariffs and questioned the origin of this figure.

He does not see the move as a political attack on Switzerland, but rather as an economic measure targeting successful and economically strong countries. Blocher emphasized that Trump remains a friend of Switzerland, but is guided by economic indicators.

When asked if Trump made the decision independently, Blocher expressed doubt, stating that “no one comes up with such an absurd idea on their own.” He suspects that economic advisors played a role.

While warning of the potential consequences for the US, Blocher also sees a chance for the tariffs to be negotiated. He believes the Swiss government should take advantage of this opportunity and find a solution. The former Federal Councillor praised the government’s decision to refrain from immediate countermeasures, as it preserves the possibility of negotiation.
