A Waste of Money?

A new ministry in Germany has sparked criticism from the Federation of Taxpayers, with the organization’s president, Reiner Holznagel, calling the decision to establish two offices, one in Berlin and one in Bonn, “absurd.”

The new Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs, created by the government, is expected to have a presence in both cities, despite the government’s promise to reduce administrative costs. According to the coalition agreement, the new government aimed to make the administration more efficient.

Holznagel suggested that the government should relocate all ministries to Berlin, if it is serious about efficiency. He also called for the repeal of the Berlin/Bonn Law, which allows for the presence of ministries in both cities. The law was initially intended to bridge the gap between East and West Germany, but Holznagel believes it has become unnecessary and costly.

Earlier in the day, a ministry spokesperson confirmed that the new Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs would have a presence in both Berlin and Bonn.
