A War of Words on Effectiveness?

A former SPD faction leader, Rolf Mützenich, has expressed criticism over Germany’s defense investments in the context of the ongoing debate surrounding the SPD’s “Manifest” on Russia and defense policy. Mützenich emphasized the need for Germany to become more defense-capable and invest in relevant defense equipment, as stated in the SPD’s document.

However, he emphasized the importance of not taking a one-size-fits-all approach, but rather bundling forces in Europe and NATO. Mützenich criticized the previous government’s defense investments, stating that the results in terms of military preparedness were, in his opinion, rather modest, given the high expenditures. He warned that this trend must not continue and that defense investments should be embedded in a concept of disarmament, peace and eventually, arms control.

Furthermore, Mützenich called on the German government to take more diplomatic initiatives to end the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. He condemned the war crimes and human rights violations committed by Vladimir Putin and the threats emanating from the Kremlin, while also emphasizing the need for a joint defense capability and to strengthen Ukraine’s right to self-defense.

In addition, Mützenich urged Germany to position itself as a leading diplomatic power within Europe and to work towards a unified European voice. He criticized the lack of EU initiatives for diplomacy, coexistence and the reduction of tensions, pointing out that the only focus has been on military issues.
