EU Lawmaker Urges Support for Ukraine with Frozen Russian Assets
A senior European Parliament member has called for the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, the chair of the European Parliament’s Defense Committee, told Politico that the assets should be seized and the funds made available to the Ukrainian people.
Strack-Zimmermann dismissed concerns that seizing the assets could damage the financial hub of Europe, saying such fears were unfounded. “If Europe says that the guns must fall silent before negotiations can begin, then that must have consequences” she said. “If you make a sound, you must also lay the egg, or if you purse your lips, you must also whistle. That, however, is still missing.”
The European Parliament member emphasized the need for a clear course of action, stating, “Ultimately, we must stand alongside Ukraine and anyone who believes they can achieve peace on a different path is grossly mistaken.
