A Sign of Unity and Dialogue

On Sunday, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Bundestag President Julia Klöckner (both CDU) will attend the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV in Rome. The Bundestag administration announced this on Monday afternoon. Klöckner will represent the German Bundestag at the event.

Regarding the inauguration of the Pope, Klöckner said: “The conclave has set a powerful sign of determination and unity with the election of Pope Leo XIV. I wish the new Pope wisdom, strength and God’s blessing for the exercise of this important task.”

The Catholic Church stands as a world church facing “various expectations and inequalities” Klöckner further stated. “That it is now led by a personality known as a bridge builder, which can offer orientation and actively seeks dialogue with society, fits perfectly into this time.
