German Parliament’s EU Committee Chairman Condemns Plan to Suspend Family Reunification for Refugees with Limited Protection Status
The Chairman of the German Parliament’s Committee on European Affairs, Anton Hofreiter, has spoken out against the planned suspension of family reunification for refugees with limited protection status. In an interview with ntv on Friday, the Green Party politician described the decision as “inhumane and irresponsible”.
He urged the public to imagine a scenario in which a person, having fled to Germany, is then denied the right to bring their own minor child to join them, once they have reached a safe location. “This is absolutely inhumane” Hofreiter emphasized.
The politician also warned that the policy would ultimately hinder the integration of those who have made it to Germany, often under challenging circumstances. “When people are constantly worried about their wife, husband, or minor child, they naturally find it much harder to settle into society” he noted.
