A Recipe for Disaster?

Green Party’s Parliamentary Spokeswoman, Lamya Kaddor, sharply criticizes the latest demands of CDU’s General Secretary Carsten Linnemann to deport foreign nationals who have committed crimes.

The Union is “unbelievably simple-mindedly always taking over populist demands” to win over AfD voters, Kaddor told the Spiegel. This strategy, proven internationally for years, only strengthens the populists and doesn’t work, she added.

No one from the right-wing spectrum will take the Union’s hard line seriously after Angela Merkel, Kaddor said. “And the rest knows that these ‘tough plans’ are either unfeasible or will have a homeopathic effect.” She believes that crime can only be fought to a limited extent through migration policy. “The Union knows this, but pretends to the people that it’s a panacea. This pretence is absolutely unprofessional and dangerous.”

CDU’s General Secretary Linnemann had demanded, among other things, in the Bild, that foreign nationals who have been convicted of a crime should lose their right of residence in the future, regardless of the length of the sentence or whether it’s on probation. He also suggested that, in the case of a second intentional crime, the right of residence should automatically expire. Linnemann expressed similar views in the Deutschlandfunk.
