The Left has sharply criticized the attempt by CDU leader Friedrich Merz to push through his controversial “Zustrombegrenzungsgesetz” with the votes of the AfD in the Bundestag.
“Today, Friedrich Merz has, for the first time since the Second World War, tried to pass a law with the votes of an extremist right-wing party through the Bundestag” said the Left’s chairpeople Ines Schwerdtner and Jan van Aken on Friday. “Although it did not succeed, the intention was there. This is inexcusable and shows that Friedrich Merz may like to beat the drum with bold phrases, but he is an unreliable politician.”
It was “hellishly close.” “Therefore, it remains right: Get out on the streets, join together, organize against fascism – and take away its breeding ground” said the party’s call to action. “You don’t combat fascism with words, but by seriously taking the problems of people and giving them hope, by really improving the lives of people.” The right-wing shift is no coincidence. “It has been politically nourished over years through social cuts.”
Merz is an “unreformable repeat offender” it was further said. “He definitely does not belong in the Chancellery. After Merz has already so thoroughly overstepped this boundary before the election, he will certainly do so again after the election. It’s even known by the SPD and the Greens. And that’s why it would be good if they drew the necessary conclusion and clearly said: We will not make Friedrich Merz Chancellor” demands the Left. The SPD and the Greens must decide between Merz and anti-fascism. “It would be dishonest to speak out against the right on demos and then choose the facilitator of fascists for the Chancellery” said Schwerdtner and van Aken.
