A New Era of Transatlantic Cooperation?

German officials praise Chancellor’s US visit as a success, citing a positive start to the transatlantic relationship.

German officials from the ruling coalition have spoken positively about Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s recent visit to the United States, where he met with US President Donald Trump. Metin Hakverdi, the government’s transatlantic coordinator, described the meeting as a success, emphasizing the importance of building a good personal relationship between the two leaders. Hakverdi, a member of the Social Democratic Party, stated that the meeting had not been expected to yield significant results, but the positive atmosphere would aid in addressing global challenges, particularly the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The possibility of a trade deal between the EU and the US, mentioned by Trump, has raised hopes, according to Hakverdi, who believes a deal would be the better solution for both sides.

Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a Free Democratic Party politician and defense policy expert, also expressed relief, describing Merz’s performance as successful and praising his composure. She noted that Trump’s friendly demeanor had made it easier for Merz and that the Chancellor had flattered the President, likely also finding some pleasure in seeing Angela Merkel receive support from the President on the Nord Stream 2 issue.

However, Strack-Zimmermann highlighted the significance of the Chancellor’s clear statement that he, unlike Trump, does not view Ukraine as an aggressor, but rather Russia, which continues to attack civilians and kidnap children.
