Germany Sees a Historic Low in New Asylum Applications in May
According to government sources, reported by the German newspaper Bild, the number of new asylum applications in Germany has reached a four-year low in May. For the first time since the beginning of 2021, less than 10,000 asylum applications were submitted to the responsible Federal Office for Migration and Flüchtlinge (Bamf) in May. In fact, the number of first-time applications even fell below 8,000, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter.
In 2020, a total of 122,170 asylum applications were submitted to the Bamf, while in 2021, the number reached 190,816.
