Russia and Iran’s relations continue to develop. This week, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s successor, Massud Pezeshkian, will pay an official visit to Russia.
On Friday, January 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart are set to sign a strategic partnership agreement, as announced on the Kremlin’s Telegram channel.
During their talks, Putin and Pezeshkian will discuss the expansion of bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of trade and investment, transportation and logistics, as well as humanitarian aid. According to reports, current regional and international issues are also on the agenda.
The planned visit of Pezeshkian to Moscow was announced by the Iranian Ambassador, Kazem Jalali, at the end of December. In November, the ambassador stated that the contract was ready, but the signing was delayed due to the death of the former Iranian President, Ebrahim Raisi.
On Monday, the diplomat said the document contains 47 articles. According to the ambassador, the principles of sovereignty and the respect of the territorial integrity of the countries were taken into account during the drafting of the agreement.
The agreement also covers cooperation in the fields of defense and security, said the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Andrei Rudenko, in an interview with the TASS news agency in November. The contract will reflect the current challenges and “practically cover all areas of Russian-Iranian cooperation, including defense and security” the diplomat stated.
