A Hollow Shell of Empty Promises?

German politician Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, a defense policy expert for the Free Democratic Party (FDP), has described the speech of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on Ukraine and transatlantic relations at the Munich Security Conference as “completely ineffective”.

“Not what we’ve had to experience in the last few years: he talks in big, not false words about what needs to be done”, Strack-Zimmermann said to the newspapers of the Funke Media Group. “Implementing the same: a failure. Too late, even a week before his departure, as well.”

According to Strack-Zimmermann, the interest in the Chancellor’s appearance was correspondingly low. “The rows were sparsely filled.” The conference participants were actively encouraged to come into the hall – “and that for the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany”, she added. Scholz had criticized the US government in his speech and called for a common course for the security of Europe and a peace in Ukraine.
