As right-wing extremist groups and parties in Germany increasingly take to the streets, the “Frankfurter Rundschau” reports, citing a response from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to a question from Left Party politician Petra Pau and her group.
According to the ministry, a total of 316 demonstrations, gatherings, and marches of national significance were registered in 2024, more than double the number from two years ago, when around 150 events were counted. In 2023, the number stood at 268.
The figure could still rise, as the police often provide late reports. The ministry, for instance, only reported 22 events for the fourth quarter, whereas there were 136 in the first quarter.
“With the increasingly right-wing rhetoric from almost all parties in election campaign mode and the breach of the wall to the AfD, it is to be feared that the numbers will continue to rise this year” said Pau to the “Frankfurter Rundschau”. The numbers showed “a still high mobilization capacity of the extreme right. We last experienced this in Magdeburg, where the right instrumentalized the terrible attack of December 20 for their purposes” Pau stated.
