Hamburg’s Mayor Emphasizes Stronger Local Performance of SPD in Recent Election
Hamburg’s Mayor Peter Tschentscher of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) highlighted the better performance of his party in the recent Hamburg state election, compared to the national Bundestag election.
Speaking at the SPD’s election party on Sunday evening, Tschentscher described the situation before the Bundestag election, which was held a week earlier, as “tense.” He added, “We managed it. We should remember that we, as the SPD in Germany, can win elections.” He also expressed satisfaction with the relatively weak performance of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the Hamburg election, saying, “It’s a great message that the grumblers from the right-wing corner were held at bay in Hamburg.”
According to current high-reckoning and prognoses of ARD and ZDF, the SPD has emerged as the clear winner in the Hamburg state election, with an average of 34 percent of the vote. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Greens followed, with 19.9 and 18.8 percent, respectively. The Left Party and the AfD received 11.5 and 7.7 percent, respectively. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Basic Security for All (BSW) are expected to fall short of the 5-percent threshold, with the remaining parties and independent candidates accounting for an average of 8.2 percent of the vote.
