President of the Economic Advisory Council, Monika Schnitzer, has shown open support for the introduction of a part-time sick leave system.

“A part-time sick leave system can also be sensible in the sense of reintegration. Ultimately, the family doctors would have to assess on a case-by-case basis what is feasible and what is not” Schnitzer told the Funke Media Group newspapers. A part-time sick leave system would only apply to jobs where work can still be done despite illness.

“If I’m a salesperson standing behind the sausage counter and break my leg, then I obviously need to be on sick leave” Schnitzer clarified. “But if I have an office job, then it might be possible for me to work for a certain time despite a broken leg.
