A former Berlin mayor and a departing SPD member of the German Bundestag, Michael Müller, has sharply criticized the decision of Annalena Baerbock, the current German Foreign Minister, to succeed as the President of the United Nations General Assembly.
Although Müller described the decision as “a good one for Germany” in an interview with the “Spiegel”, he emphasized that the United Nations’ main objective is to exert influence on conflicts and wars through diplomatic means. He questioned whether Baerbock had been successful in this regard in the past, citing her alleged reluctance to engage in stronger diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Müller expressed the hope that Baerbock would recognize the opportunities that diplomacy offers. The news of the German government’s nomination of Baerbock for the position was announced earlier in the week and her election in June is considered likely.
